About SYE
PREAMBLE
During the fall of 2003, the Provost and Vice President for Student Affairs convened a Senior Year Experience Committee to consider and develop a culminating experience for graduating undergraduate students. The impetus for this initiative was rooted in findings from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and our continuing efforts to maintain an interconnected and developmentally appropriate experience for our students.
Following an administrative review of all graduation offerings across the numerous schools and colleges of the University, a national benchmarking of SYE programs at peer institutions, and numerous discussions regarding how to best implement a UConn SYE, the “Senior Year Experience Program” was launched during the spring of 2004. It is out of this context that we offer the following mission and program goals.
MISSION
The Senior Year Experience promotes a successful transition for college students to the world beyond the University. This program, balanced with academic and programmatic initiatives, provides an opportunity for reflection to determine the meaning and value of the undergraduate experience and the student’s growing role as a productive and valued citizen and university alumnus.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Student development requires opportunities for self-assessment and introspection. Students who form meaningful relationships with faculty/staff report the greatest satisfaction with their college experience.
The Senior Year Experience will:
- Generate a feeling of pride and spirit in the UConn Community.
- Encourage students to utilize the many resources available on campus to prepare them for their post-university life.
- Provide opportunities for the student to revisit components to living a positive and healthy lifestyle.
- Assist the student in preparing for the roles of the college graduate as a university alumnus and citizen leader.
- Address the balance of values, ethics, career, civic engagement, and global citizenship.
